Item Details

A large and impressive antique stained glass window depicting St John, the Evangelist, dating from circa 1860. In this stunning glasswork piece, the Saint is depicted in vibrant red drapery, a feathered quill in one hand – representing his role as author of the Gospel of John – and a chalice in the other from which emerges a small dragon.

According to legend, the dragon, sometimes also modelled as a serpent, symbolises the devil. As the story goes, John was asked to test the power of his faith by drinking from a poisoned cup. The Saint drank from the chalice and was unharmed.

CONDITION REPORT

Good structural condition. Two very minor 1cm long cracks to the orange glass panes on the border near quill and back. A couple of small gaps where the original panel (depicting St John) has been set into larger frame. Fitted with aluminium strengthening supports to the sides.
