More on Ammonites
This is a rare, spectacular and large specimen. Due to their familiar spiral shape shell, ammonites are one of the most recognisable fossils.
They are marine animal fossils from the Jurassic period between 240 and 65 million years ago. These molluscs are more closely related to octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish.
The fossils wash out of the cliffs and can be found mixed in the gravels of the beach.
Several species of minerals contributed to the fossilisation of the animals including pyrite.
