Item Details

Handcrafted by a talented blacksmith of the 19th century, this Victorian wrought iron side gate is exceptionally well preserved. Original finials across the top and throughout have stood the test of time for more than 100 years, making a traditional feature in a 21st century garden, courtyard or passageway. It has an old paint finish, a working latch and parts of the original hinges meaning that it is ready for incorporation into an outdoor setting with minimal maintenance. Made in the Victorian era, this side gate is much more than simply a gate, instilling a garden with elegance and history.

Wrought Iron Gates

Gates and ironwork made from wrought iron have stood the test of time. This traditional method of craftsmanship sees the metal heated to a high temperature and then hammered into shape by a blacksmith’s hand, creating a robust and durable finish. The more wrought iron is worked, the stronger it becomes, making some of the most ornate antique gates some of the strongest. Large scale commercial production of wrought iron products ended in the mid 1970s due to the expensive and time-consuming nature of blacksmithing, making wrought iron gates true antiques, showcasing talented craftsmanship of the past.
