Item Details

A set of three mid-18th century Delft style tiles by Sadler & Green of Liverpool dating from circa 1765.

Ex. private British collection, these decorative antique tiles are each transfer printed with scenes from three of Aesop’s Fables, including Two Travellers and a Bear (top), The Geese and the Cranes (left) and The Wolf and the Boar (right).

Beautifully detailed, these three collector’s tiles make a charming set, each with light wear that tells the story of their unique history.

Sadler & Green Tiles

Sadler and Green was established by John Sadler and Guy Green in 1761, though the business partners had worked together manufacturing tin-glazed, transfer printed tiles since 1756.

Also known as 'Liverpool Tiles', Sadler and Green tiles were highly regarded for their beautiful and fast-to-manufacture transfer printed designs, so much so that they claimed they could decorate more than 1200 tiles in just six hours!

In 1770, John Sadler retired but Guy Green continued to print tiles at the company until at least 1780.
