About the Artist :

Rosemary Eva Broom Rosemary Eva Broom (1932–2025) was a Scottish painter whose work spans more than half a century. Born in Campbeltown in 1932, Broom studied art and developed a practice rooted principally in painting. Her surviving early work shows an artist experimenting confidently with composition, colour and increasingly expressive handling of paint. She married fellow artist Rendell Wells in 1974, and the couple lived and worked in Scotland. Although their lives and artistic worlds overlapped, Broom developed a recognisable language of her own. Her later landscapes are particularly distinctive. Paint is frequently applied thickly and worked across the surface, with colour and texture used to evoke rather than precisely describe the landscape. The resulting paintings can move between recognisable landscape and near-abstraction. Broom continued painting into later life and died in 2025. The works now emerging from the Wells/Broom collection provide a rare opportunity to see her development from early student work through to the heavily worked landscapes of her mature career.
