Item Details

A fine pair of ship’s portraits of the Brigantine Eugenie, painted in oil on canvas and within good, period bird’s eye maple frames. Signed, although now very faintly, H. (Heinrich Andreas Sophus) Petersen, (German, 1834-1916). The legend, written lower left, informs that these paintings depict the Eugenie passing Helgoland (Heligoland) in 1860 whilst under the command of J. Jarvis, the pendant showing Eugenie under reduced sail and in bad weather.

From the eighteenth century there had been a flourishing school of ship’s portrait painters working out of Altonaer, an area neighboring Hamburg and now absorbed by the port that had grown so rapidly during the 19th century. Amongst this school of artists was the father and son, Lorenz and Heinrich Peterson, who sometimes worked in conjunction with a relative of theirs; Peter Christian Holm. All are represented in the Altonaer Museum.
