Mezzotint; The Most Noble Lord Horatio Nelson, Viscount & Baron Nelson of The Nile. Bonaparte planned to drive Britain from India and to this end invaded Egypt as a first step in his campaign. In spite of being chased by a fleet of British ships under the command of Rear-Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson, Bonaparte's ships, under the command of Vice-Admiral François-Paul Brueys d'Aigalliers, succeeded in landing at Aboukir Bay, Egypt, taking Malta en route. The British fleet arrived off Egypt on the 1st August. Nelson ordered an immediate attack on the discovered French forces and at the end of a three hour battle the divided fleet of the French was defeated. Just two ships of the line and two frigates escaped from a total of seventeen French ships engaged.
