Item Description

Benedetto Sangiovanni was born in Naples in 1781 and by 1830 he is recorded as living at 15 Warren Street, London. He is recorded at several London addresses between this date and 1844 including Wardour Street and Nasseau Street. He died in Brighton in 1853.
Self taught, the journal of the Society of Artists record that they ‘rejoice to see examples of his genius’. His work was largely executed in plaster or clay although sometimes treated as maquettes for casting in bronze. An article in the Weekly True Sun, March 1835, states that "Signor Sangiovanni has modelled in clay, which clay is bought from the line of the railway being formed near Primrose Hill, some of the most beautiful and elaborately finnished figures ever designed'.
His models of brigands and rustic Neopolitan scenes formed much of his work, some of which was exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1828 and 1847.
The present model may in fact be his exhibit at the academy in 1838, entry No.1327.
Within the original gilded and glazed case.
