Item Details

A fine Georgian period portrait of the young Elizabeth Jordan Kemp, painted three-quarter-length wearing long black gloves and a white spotted dress with a wide blue satin sash. She is seated before a wooded landscape with a mountainous backdrop. Painted in oil on canvas circa 1800 and identified to the reverse of the canvas, within the original fine, carved giltwood frame. o.s:w.23.5 inches x h.27.5 inches  s.s:23.5 inches x 19.5 inches

Elizabeth Jordan is recorded as marrying Charles Kemp at around this time; the work attributed to Sir Martin Archer Shee. (Irish 1769-1850)

Shee was born in Dublin and studied at the Royal Dublin Society. He left home, aged just 15, and established himself as a portrait painter in pastels. His success in Dublin encouraged him to move to London, in 1788, lodging in Covent Garden. The following year he was able to exhibit his first two portraits at the Royal Academy Annual Exhibition. He became friends with Sir Thomas Lawrence and entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1790, the beginnings of a life long association with the academy, being elected President after Lawrence’s death in 1830.
