Item Details

Three portraits of a family painted in oil on canvas by A.T Woodcock; within their original grained frames with a gilded sight.

The mother signed and dated along the bottom left hand edge, and dated 1837, depicted in her mourning finery beside a table displaying her silver framed spectacles, silver snuff box and red leather bound book. Inscribed to the reverse by the artist, this time dated Feb. 7th 1840.

Her presumed daughter is dressed fashionably for the time, wearing a long guard chain and a lacy bonnet embroidered with flowers. A tiny kitten plays with a ball of wool on a cross banded occasional table beside her. Inscribed to the reverse in a like manner to the mother.

The man in the family is clearly most interested in shooting and is shown wearing a good outdoors jacket, some jewellery and his shotgun in the crook of his arm; beside him is his shot flask.

Presumed English but possibly American, circa 1840.
