Item Details
The Hunter's Larder by Benjamin Blake. A larder scene with a good day's bag shown on a shelf in a pantry. Painted in oil on canvas and within a period, perhaps original, gilt gesso frame. English circa 1820. o.s:14 in x 12.25 in
Originally from Wiltshire, Blake (fl1790-1830) worked for most of his life in London, producing small, gem-like larder and game scenes. This piece is typical of his work which owes much to seventeenth-century Dutch prototypes. It is interesting to learn that Blake was sometimes employed by dealers to copy old Dutch pictures, some of which were not sold under his own name.
