Finely presented in a dark oak wedge-form frame with a gilded oak spandrel. The portrait inscribed in the artist's hand 'Small, but great amongst the giants of 1884.5.6' H.F. Lucas Lucas.
spandrel dia: 6.5 inches.

Reading of The Bard on 'Thoroughbred Heritage' we learn that The Bard was 'a small colt with a game heart, unbeaten in his sixteen juvenile races, won all but two of his twenty-five starts, at distances from five furlongs to 2-1/4 miles. He was a member of the great generation that included Ormonde, Minting, and Saraband, that made for some of the best racing England ever saw.'
H.F. Lucas Lucas (1848-1943), painted a number of hunting scenes, especially of the Pytchley. Earl Beatty was one of his patrons and Forres published several of his works as prints.
