Sir Joshua Reynolds has used the subject of Ariadne, daughter of King Minos of Crete, to inform this portrait of Elizabeth Dunning, Lady Ashburton, wife of John Dunning, 1st Baron Ashburton.


A fine, early mezzotint, engraved by William Doughty, himself a portrait painter, and first published by him, as here, in 1779.


With scratch titles, within a replica eighteenth century print frame.
