This fine mezzotint was made by Thomas Watson in February of 1780, soon after Sir Joshua Reynolds had finished the work in 1778.


Within a late Victorian 'Hogarth' frame.

It is considered most likely that the portrait of Mrs. George Hardinge nee Lucy Long, was commissioned to mark the occasion of her marriage to George Hardinge, Judge, politician and author, on 20th October 1777.


The original Reynolds portrait was sold by auction with Christies on the 30th June 2016. Thomas Watson was a fine and accomplished mezzotint and stipple engraver making plates after the likes of Godfrey Kneller and, as in the present case, Sir Joshua Reynolds. He exhibited his work at the Great Room Spring Gardens in 1775, the sixteenth exhibition of the Society of Artists of Great Britain.
