Exceptional engraving, first state of two. A self portrait by Ottavio Leoni as a Knight of Malta, done in Rome, 1625.


Ex collection J.A. Boerner, apparently inscribed by him in ink verso.

Leoni was highly successful as a portraitist working in Rome during the first thirty years of the seventeenth century. He produced numerous works using black, red and white chalks on tinted paper. During his last decade more than forty engraved portraits were produced leaving behind many more that remained unrealized at the time of his death in 1630.


Within a good modern frame showing the work trimmed to the plate mark or with thread margins.
