Item Description

A fine Georgian portrait of an English country gentleman executed in pastel by James Sharples and within the original gilt gesso frame.
o.s:13 in x 14 in
An English portrait painter and pastelist, James Sharples moved with his family and third wife, Ellen, to the United States in 1794. He first exhibited at the Royal Academ, London, in 1779.
Living in Washington DC, the Sharples established a successful portraiture practice with James painting the portraits of American leaders and Ellen copying them on commission. This portrait done circa 1785.
