A rare example of a Relic of King James the Second, another held in the collection at Chiddingstone Castle in Kent. Reading the label at Chiddingstone we learn that 'For Jacobites, images, belongings, and relics of the Stuart royal family were precious........ The circular horn box contains a small trace of (James the Seconds') blood, hair, and garter ribbon.


James II died in France and was buried in Paris. During the French Revolution his tomb was raided and his remains scattered'.


This relic is mounted onto velvet and within a carved and gilded antique frame.


The horn case with a diameter of 2 inches.


The collection at Chiddingstone Castle was formed by the extraordinary Denys Bower, himself a member of the Royal Stuart Society. (He considered himself to be a reincarnation of Bonnie Prince Charlie). Highlights of the collection include a relic the same as the example offered here, two portrait miniatures of James II and Charles II by Samuel Cooper, broadswords used in the Battle of Culloden and a further collection of artefacts with hidden Jacobite symbols including drinking glasses, snuff boxes, a pincushion and a compass.
