A fine example of the bronze sculpture of Silenus holding aloft a snake; after the antique found at Pompeii. The supported ring with three anthemion leaves holding the original oil reservoir that would be taken to the lamp room of the grand house for regular recharging and refreshing of the wick. h:25.5 inches x base dia:10 in.
Fine brown/dark green patina.
Silenus was the companion of Dionysus, the God of Wine from ancient Greece. A great drinker, he is usually portrayed being supported by satyrs or carried on a donkey. Described in literature as the oldest, wisest and most often inebriated of followers, when drunk he was said to posses special knowledge and powers of prophecy. I know the feeling.
