A fine still-life painting of fruit on a silver plate, painted oil on canvas and within a period gilt gesso frame, signed l.r. by the artist, Joshua Hargrave Sams Mann.

Mann is thought to have been born in Hertfordshire in around 1826 and married Katherine Marion Williams in 1860, the marriage registered in Wandsworth. At this time Mann was known to be a friend of Whistler's. He was a prolific artist and exhibited regularly; between 1850 and just two years short of his death in 1886, he exhibited 34 works at the Royal Academy alone.


Over this entire period Mann's recorded addresses at the RA were all given as in North London, in or around Camden.
