Mercier's model for this work was the Georgian actress and socialite, 'Peg' Woffington. Playing leading roles in both Dublin and London, she was recognised in her time as a superb comic actor, also celebrated for her Shakespearean roles. She achieved some notoriety for her bitter rivalry with other actresses, (stabbing Mrs. Bellamy during a performance) and for her rumoured love affairs, most notably that with David Garrick who wrote songs for her including 'My Lovely Peggy'.
