Item Details

'Veduta del Tempio d'Iside quale oggiesiste fragli avanzi dell'antica Citta di Pompei'. Drawn from life by the French artist Louis Jean Desprez and etched by Francesco Piranesi in 1788; an extensive key lettered in the title band.

The Roman sites of Herculaneum and Pompeii were famously buried beneath the ash of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, rediscovered and excavated in the 1700s, the sites becoming popular with enlightened Europeans and England's young aristocracy on their Grand Tour. The magic of these two artists to be found in the details, not only of the ruins but of the tourists themselves, dressed in their finery and with their dogs, local characters adding to the authenticity of this eighteenth century scene. Francesco Piranesi and Louis Jean Desprez capitalized on this popularity producing a series of prints of the tourists' sites, as did a great many other artists and craftsmen.

This print dating from around the publication date of 1788, within a good copy of a correct eighteenth century frame.
