Item Details

A wonderful Georgian pendant, the front set with a Wedgwood plaque of blue jasper-dip with a white cameo depicting the Bourbonnais Shepherd; a shepherd boy cradling a lamb; his dog beside him.

To the reverse is a gold metal bezel framing a portrait miniature of a young man, the whole set within a cut steel frame, likely Birmingham, probably Matthew Boulton, suspended from a conforming chain of cut steel with two pairs of jasper-dip beads.

The frame 2 in x 2 3/8 in overall length 13 1/2 in

The ivory registered in compliance with the ivory act.

It is thought that this cameo was designed by Lady Templeton for Josiah Wedgwood and produced by them from around 1780. The shepherd and the shepherdess, Poor Maria being Laurence Sterne's counterpart to this shepherd boy, appealed to the Georgians romantic ideals, even in this distant age 'acting as totems of a simpler, picturesque life'.
