Item Details
An early 19th century whaler-made 'scrimshaw' walking cane of architectural form, the fifth column spirally carved, perhaps in emulation of the narwhal's tusk, seen within a cage of four columns with shallow concave detailing that extend to four rows of fluting below. The section following is carved into a finely detailed spiral, reciprocating the fifth column, and beneath this a further section, again carved into a spiral but in the opposing direction, the detailing a little different. The top, carved from the tooth of a sperm whale, octagonal and tapering towards the shaft; engraved with the initials in gothic, J.C.B.
Probably English circa 1820.
