Gerard Trignac was born in the Bordeaux region of France in 1955. He is a French printmaker able to combine his training as an architect with his talent for the surreal. His resulting etchings can be described as capricci, bringing together the architecture of the past by imposing on it an imagined present, resulting in an atmosphere of the “day after”, made haunting by the total absence the human form.
His images are initially put down onto paper before being realised by etching onto the copper plate, a process that can take months to finish. In this way Trignac is able to describe vast, silent spaces with bridges and stairs to nowhere, unfinished construction, part-built, imposed on an imagined yet existing place. His work shows the influence of Pirenesi, perhaps combined with that of de Chirico.
Trignac’s etchings have been exhibited throughout Europe and is held in public collections such as the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux and Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
He is amongst the leading printmakers of his generation, bringing together architectural exactitude with an imagined world through his immense skill as an engraver; using the ancient technique to describe his imagined present world.
