Hendrick van Steenwyck the Younger (ca. 1580 - 1649) - Signed 'H.V/SteeNWick' (on pillar, lower left)
“And they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!”
Matthew 27:29
A powerful and dramatically staged depiction of Christ’s humiliation, set within one of Hendrick van Steenwyck the Younger’s characteristic architectural interiors.
Signed on the pillar, the work brings together sacred narrative and imagined ecclesiastical space, placing the viewer directly within the unfolding scene. Roman soldiers crowd around Christ as they prepare the crown of thorns, their movements close, deliberate, and invasive. Christ sits bound and still, his eyes closed, enduring the moment in silence as he is dressed in a mock royal robe.
Light becomes a central element of the composition. A kneeling soldier holds a candle that illuminates Christ’s face and body, heightening the contrast between spiritual presence and human cruelty. Around them, other figures observe, participate, or arrive mid-scene, building a sense of continuous, enclosing action.
Van Steenwyck sets the episode within a vast vaulted interior, evoking a church-like space that is at once architectural and symbolic. While such a setting could not have existed at the time of the Passion, it reflects a deeper truth: that every sacred interior is shaped by the memory of Christ’s suffering.
Known primarily as a master of architectural painting, Hendrick van Steenwyck the Younger was active in the early 17th century and widely respected in his lifetime. His work was collected and admired by contemporaries, including Anthony van Dyck, who drew his portrait now in the Städel Museum, Frankfurt. Today, examples of his painting are held in major collections including the National Gallery, London.
