Item Details

A wonderful double sided Aesthetic Movement silk patchwork by Ann Elizabeth Nasmyth (1817-1893).

This patchwork boasts fascinating ranges of pattern designs throughout, a real masterpiece of craftsmanship.

Ann's work displays such an elaborate use of fabrics and threads, such materials would have been very costly and tricky to acquire at the time.

Ann signed this patchwork in 1886 'Hammerfield, Kent' which relates to a large house in Sevenoaks where she lived with her husband James Nasmyth from the year 1857. Upon purchasing they employed well known architect George Devey to extend the house.

Ann's husband - James Nasmyth is the celebrated engineer, artist, inventor and astronomer. James was most famous for inventing the steam-hammer.
