Item Description

A late nineteenth century five-legged aesthetic movement high-back chair, C.1880

With an intricately turned frame constructed in oak and traditionally upholstered in a green cotton fabric.

The same chair can be seen in the Kirkland Museum, Denver, USA and has been exhibited there since 2018. The Museum attributes this design to Dr. Christopher Dresser after comparative research with the Dorman Museum and Harry Lyons.

“There is no reason whatsoever why a chair should have four legs. If three would be better, or five, or any other number, let us use what would be best” - Christopher Dresser, 1873.
