Troughs are generally large wide planters, quite often made out of stone. Staddles stones are the mushroom shaped stone pieces that were originally used to support barns so that grain could be stored away from the ground and any rodents wishing to eat it. Stone balls, sometimes called spheres or ball finials were used to sit atop piers on gates or walls, but are commonly used today to mark out a driveway or just as ornament in a garden.
