There are many types of cupboards including housekeepers cupboards and linen cupboards which are often large and were found in many Country Houses. Some of the big houses made their own furniture and these are often referred to as 'Estate' cupboards.
Every interior will have variou cupboards of some description and though the trend is now much more for fitted furniture, you simply won't get the character or presence thaat a freestanding antique piece will offer you. Also, on a practical level, you can take it with you when you move home or simply wish to move it into another room - useful for when you add a home extension!
The word Wardrobe first originated in the 14th Century and is derived from the French terms warderobe, wardereube and garderobe, in which "warder" meant "to keep, to guard" and "robe" meant "garment". These can often be found in 'kit' form, even 19th Century ones, so that they could be easily transported and erected where needed, which is pretty useful for modern-day use and our narrow stairways.
