The Arts & Crafts movement was an international trend that began in England and then flourished in Europe between the years 1880 and 1920. It even landed in Japan in the 1920's and became known as the Mingei movement.
Amongst one of the more famous names from this period was English furniture designers Shoolbred, who actually began their business in the 1820s in London as a drapery shop, selling textiles to the furniture industry. It wasn't until the 1860's that the company started to design and produce their own furniture range. They became so successful and had expanded their business so much, that by the 1880's they had to move to larger premises and became one of the first Department Stores in London. Unfortunately they never recovered from the financial crisis of the 1920's and ceased trading in 1931. Their furniture is very sought after today.
