Item Description
Vintage Robj Paris Art Deco set of 9 duck shaped porcelain knife rests, 1920`s ca, French.
These vintage items have been gently cleaned while respecting the aged patina. They are ready to use.
This exquisite set of nine vintage knife rests perfectly encapsulates the geometric elegance of the Art Deco movement. Designed in France during the 1920`s, these pieces were created for the renowned Parisian design firm Robj, a brand celebrated for its whimsical yet sophisticated tableware. The design is attributed to the famous Swiss-born sculptor Edouard Marcel Sandoz, who was highly regarded for his stylized, cubist-influenced animal figures.
Each knife rest is finely sculpted into the stylized shape of a resting duck. The design features a smooth, streamlined body that gently tapers into a practical, raised tailpiece, providing an elegant and functional support to keep used flatware from marking the table linen.
Crafted from high-quality white French porcelain, the set balances clean minimalism with striking luxury. The head and breast of each duck are embellished with fine gold gilding. This striking juxtaposition of glossy gold and crisp white porcelain highlights the geometric lines characteristic of the era, making this set a great example of early 20th Century French luxury design.
All pieces are stamped underneath: "ROBJ PARIS MADE IN FRANCE M.D."

ROBJ PARIS HISTORY
Robj Paris was a fashionable design brand of the 1920`s Jazz Age, famous for its whimsical, geometric Art Déco porcelain. Founded in 1908 by Jean Born (who created the name as an anagram of J. Born), the company originally produced small novelty items. After Born tragically died in 1922, shareholder Lucien Willemetz took over and transformed the business into a luxury trendsetter, winning a bronze medal at the landmark 1925 Paris Exposition.
Crucially, Robj was a design house, not a factory. They operated a Parisian showroom where they commissioned avant-garde sculptors to design playful table settings, animal figurines, and liquor decanters. They outsourced the physical production to premium manufacturers, including Villeroy & Boch and elite workshops in Limoges. The brand ceased trading in 1931 due to the Great Depression, making its short-lived, decade long catalog highly collectible today.
