Item Description

The ancient French capital in oak, hailing from around the time of the battle of Agincourt, the chamfered legs added in the 19th century, the large primitive slab top with gadrooned carved frieze, now acting as a stool or chopping block.

In lovely crusty condition, the whole has evidence of old worm but it is not currently present. The legs have some small cap feet added for stability; the three-legged format meaning that it would be stable on any uneven footing. The main block is well worn with a lovely smooth genuine surface and honest colour.

With the addition of the legs this now has the look of a chopping or butchers block, though its original purpose would have been architectural, as chopping blocks were never decorated as they were made purely with function in mind with no concession made to style. The deep gadrooning is very much of the period.

A wonky, brilliant piece, now more of a sculpture, and with an abundance of originality and charm.
