Item Description
A Very Fine Pair of Late 18th/Early 19th Century Italian Bookmatched Walnut Commodes.
These lovely commodes have three drawers, one of which is disguised by the overhanging frieze. They stand on square sectioned legs and feet. The supporting pilasters to the front are bronze with gilt bronze capitals and bases. The original metalwork used throughout is of high quality with flowerhead-shaped backplates to the handles and conforming escutcheon plates.
The commodes are very striking to look at due to the quality of the veneers and the way that they have been bookmatched down the fronts and across the top. High quality burr veneers have been used for the frieze which contrast with the longer grain used on the lower drawer fronts and the tops. This scheme is copied on the sides of the pieces as well.
A high quality pair of commodes of interesting form and great colour.
