Item Description

A wonderful provincial scene of a revering William Shakespeare holding a pen, in a fanciful woodland.

The outdoor scence would appear to be the wild woods outside of Athens from A Mid Summers Night Dream, with Puck, Oberon, Titania and Nick Bottom the weaver Donkey all lurking in the foreground.

Age related craquelure to the painted surface, the odd small hole, in perfect untouched original condition in my view. Again the gilt and gesso frame has seen better days but would appear to be original to the painting.

A fantastically whimsical painting, a true rarity

Likely to be from the last quarter of the 18th century when Shakespeare was a popular fashionable figure.

23/26/2.5cm
