Item Description

At 62 inches high and with a base of 12 inches diameter, this vaseline glass lilly vase is perhaps the largest that James Powell and Sons made.English circa 1890.

In 1834 James Powell purchased the Fleet Street glass works of the Whitefriars Glass Company. With his two sons, Arthur and Nathanael, the company developed many new techniques and were able to acquire a considerable number of patents for these innovations. They became world leaders in their field creating stained glass for the hundreds of new churches being built throughout the Victorian era.
Towards the end of the 19th century the firm worked closely with the leading architects and designers of the day including Philip Webb, William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and T.G. Jackson. In 1875 Harry James Powell joined the firm, grandson of the original James and an Oxford graduate in chemistry, his knowledge lead to a more scientific production and new products such as opalescent glass and previously unattainable colours. The firm exhibited at many of the national and international trade exhibitions that became popular following on from the Great Exhibition of 1851.
