Rabari Chakla cushions

PENNY WORRALL
Wow! These 2 pillows are made from a pair of Rabari chaklas (wall hangings) that are the most exquisite quality. The stitching is tiny and beautifully executed and the mirror work tight and neat. The chaklas would have taken hundreds of hours to make and work of this skill is not found any more. Many of the designs that are sewn later, substitute ric-rac for some hand stitching and this saves the needle woman quite a lot of time. But not these ones, all hand done! The chaklas are approx 19"" square so will make good sized statement cushions. The backs are plain vintage hemp. There are a zip fasteners and feather pads. They look fab in a neutral setting and I like these orange colours with blues as well.

These textiles are large, exquisite and very rare and this is reflected in the price of the cushions. The chaklas were made as a pair and I would prefer that the cushions were kept as a pair if possible.

I am inspired by the exquisite textiles designed and woven long ago by artisans often in some of the most challenging environments in the world. I love to find a new use for these textiles so that they become relevant in today’s interiors. Turning them into beautiful and unique cushions or lampshades or simply by framing them as a piece of wall art.

I particularly love the bright colours of the silk dowry textiles woven by the minority groups in South West China and the more organic raphia cloths and cotton stripweaves from the Kuba and Yoruba ethnic groups in West Africa.

My signature look mixes these bright and sophisticated silk brocades (especially the pinks!) with the contrasting rustic indigos and cottons, often embellished with embroidery or applique.

I work out of my studio in Purley, Surrey where you are very welcome by appointment to view current stock and other textiles or to discuss bespoke projects.
