Item Description

A silver-cased travelling inkwell hallmarked for Birmingham 1893. The owner's initials engraved beneath the release button, N.H., the lid beautifully and finely engraved 'Souvenir From Madam Katti Lanner'.

Katherina Josefa Lanner, known as Katti, was the daughter of celebrated composer and conductor, Josef Franz Karl Lanner; the Waltz King. Katti herself was to be called 'the best ballerina known'.
She founded her own ballet company in 1865, The Viennese Ballet and Pantomime Troupe, and successfully toured Scandinavia, Russia, France, Portugal, U.S.A and England. In 1875 she settle in London and took on the direction of the National Training School for Dancing and was thereby instrumental in establishing an institutional basis for English ballet. When the Empire Theatre of Varieties opened in Leicester Square, 1887, Lanner became the ballet mistress of the resident company and during her 20 years in this post produced 34 ballets.
This inkwell is hallmarked for 1893; 'Round The Town' being performed between 1892 and 1895. Lanner is a notable figure in dance history being the first woman to make a career as a choreographer.
