Item Description
An extremely fine, Regency period marble figure of 'The Guardian Angel' from the workshop of Luigi Bienaimé, beautifully carved, crisply detailed and in very good condition.
Italy circa 1840
Luigi Bienaimé, won a scholarship from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara and became Thorvaldsen’s chief assistant, managing his studio with Tenerani and Freund from 1819. He was one of the leading Regency sculptors, making a number of works for the Russian court in St Peterburg and had many royal patrons, later in life he was to become professor of sculpture in the Accademia di San Luca.
Bienaimé's original plaster of the Guardian Angel is in the Accademia di Carrara. Dated 1831, it was designed in Rome and shows the deep influence of Thorvaldsen, especially in the delicate way he treats the subject, it was to become one of the sculptor's most successful compositions.
An identical figure sold at Sotheby's 19th and 20th century sculpture sale, July 12th 2023, lot 10.
