Item Description

A superb example of French Empire furniture-making at its most assured, this secrétaire à abattant — or fall-front secretary — epitomises the neoclassical ambitions of the early nineteenth century. Veneered throughout in richly figured burr walnut, the piece carries an immediate visual energy: the swirling grain catches light from every angle, transforming the cabinet’s austere architectural form into something warm and alive. Made in France around 1850, it was produced at the very moment when the Empire idiom was reaching its definitive maturity. The structure follows the classic Empire canon: a tall rectangular corps surmounted by a projecting cornice, flanked on either side by detached columns with gilt brass capitals and bases. These colonnes détachées — freestanding rather than engaged to the surface — are a refinement seen only on higher-quality pieces, requiring greater skill in construction and lending the secretary an open, three-dimensional quality that lesser examples lack. The fall-front drops to reveal a leather-lined writing surface supported on sliding lopers, behind which the interior is fitted with an arrangement of small drawers and compartments, including a discreet secret drawer concealed from casual inspection. The lower section of the body houses two further drawers, while the whole rests on turned feet that provide a light counterpoint to the weight of the upper structure. The gilt brass hardware — keyhole escutcheons and column mounts — is original and retains its warm patina, complementing the honey-amber tones of the burr walnut throughout. In excellent condition for its age, this secretary is both a fully functioning piece of furniture and a collector’s object of real distinction. Secrétaires à abattant of this quality and material are perennial favourites at auction, prized for their versatility in the home as much as for their significance in the canon of French decorative arts.
