Item Description
This square coffee table brilliantly embodies the minimalist aesthetic that established the reputation of Italian design in the second half of the 20th century. Its carefully restrained matte-black lacquered metal frame outlines a perfectly balanced volume on which rests a generous clear glass top. The contrast between the opacity of the black and the transparency of the glass gives the piece a remarkable visual lightness. The attribution to Paolo Piva, the Venetian designer and architect best known for his collaborations with B&B Italia and Wittmann, is supported by the geometric rigor of the design, the economy of means and the quality of execution. Piva, trained at the IUAV in Venice during the 1960s, left a deep mark on Italian furniture through a purist approach in which every edge and every joint follows a clearly legible constructive logic. The craftsmanship is exemplary: the metal has been treated with a deep, perfectly uniform matte lacquer that has weathered the years, while the thick clear-glass top — with a finely beveled edge — gently reflects the light and gives the piece a strong visual presence without ever weighing it down. The almost perfectly square proportions make it a strikingly versatile piece. This coffee table will sit beautifully at the heart of a contemporary living room or a modernist-leaning interior. It pairs ideally with low and deep sofas, holds books, trays and decorative objects, and works just as well with 1970s vintage furniture as with contemporary design. A signature piece by a key name in Italian design.
