Item Description

A striking vintage fossil stone and slate coffee table, dating from the 1970s, with a beautifully sculptural architectural form and a wonderfully rich dark surface.

The large organically shaped tabletop is the defining feature of this piece. Crafted from dark natural stone/slate containing clearly visible fossil inclusions, the surface displays an extraordinary pattern of shells, circular fossil formations and naturally occurring mineral variations. These prehistoric inclusions give every part of the tabletop its own character and make the table completely unique.

The stone has a wonderfully tactile, subtly textured surface rather than a highly polished finish. Its deep charcoal, brown and almost black tones beautifully emphasize the lighter fossils embedded throughout the material.

The tabletop has an unusual free-form rectangular silhouette with softly rounded corners and gently curved edges, finished with a substantial rounded border. This softer organic outline contrasts beautifully with the strong architectural construction underneath.

The base consists of broad sculptural supports with a lower central shelf, creating a low, substantial profile characteristic of European Brutalist and organic modern furniture of the period. Viewed from the side, the geometric supports give the table an almost architectural quality.

With its impressive 128 cm width, this is a substantial statement coffee table that combines natural history with strong 1970s design. The dark fossil stone works particularly well alongside neutral interiors, linen upholstery, leather, natural woods and contemporary furniture.

An exceptional piece for a Brutalist, Organic Modern, Wabi-Sabi or sophisticated contemporary interior, and particularly attractive for collectors looking for furniture made from unusual natural materials.
