Item Description
Exquisite 19th Century Carved Meerschaum Pipe – Eagle’s Claw with Amber & Silver Mount
A striking and highly collectible Victorian-era meerschaum smoking pipe, masterfully hand-carved in the form of an eagle’s claw clutching an egg — a symbol of strength, precision, and craftsmanship.
This impressive piece, dating from the late 19th century, features a beautifully patinated meerschaum bowl, rich in warm golden and amber tones, a result of decades of careful smoking that has enhanced its natural character. The amber stem, elegantly finished with a silver mount, adds an extra touch of refinement.
A particularly desirable feature is its original velvet-lined case, proudly marked with the retailer’s name: Giacomo Weiss, Trieste — a lovely provenance detail for collectors.
Notable for its larger size among meerschaum pipes:
Length: 22 cm
Height: 8.5 cm
Width (widest point): 6 cm
The case dimensions:
Length: 23.5 cm
Width (widest point): 10 cm
Height: 6.3 cm
Crafted from meerschaum, a rare and highly prized clay-like mineral (magnesium silicate) mainly sourced from Turkey, renowned for its incredible porosity. This material absorbs tobacco’s oils and tars, allowing the pipe to gradually develop its unique golden patina — historically, young apprentices were even employed to smoke new pipes to speed along this beautiful aging process.
Condition:
Offered in fine antique condition with age-related scuffs, scratches, and minor stains, consistent with careful use over time.
The case shows wear, fading, and hinge damage but remains an important part of the piece’s history and presentation.
This is a highly sought-after collector’s item, perfect for display or as a distinguished addition to any fine pipe or antique collection.
