Pair of Decorative Renaissance-Style Rearing Horse Garden Statues After Giambologna

Subject & Medium
This commanding pair of rearing horses embodies one of the most enduring themes in classical sculpture. Horses, celebrated since antiquity as symbols of nobility, freedom, and strength, are depicted here in their most dynamic form — rearing upon their hind legs, frozen in a moment of spirited energy.
Cast in heavy composite stone with a white marble-style finish, the pair captures the grandeur of the antique tradition while offering the durability of modern craftsmanship. Produced in the 21st century, they combine the timeless aesthetic of Renaissance-inspired art with the practicality required for today’s gardens and interiors.
Composition & Technique
Each horse is meticulously cast in composite stone, a robust medium that captures fine detail and resists the elements. Resting on square plinth bases (25 cm x 25 cm), the statues achieve stability and presence whether displayed indoors or outdoors.
The anatomical precision of the casting — rippling muscles, flowing manes, arched necks, and raised forelegs — creates a vivid sense of motion. Their surface shows a natural weathered patina which, with time, will continue to develop, deepening the illusion of age and authenticity.
Design Features
The horses complement one another perfectly, creating striking symmetry whether placed as gate guardians, flanking a pathway, or serving as a dramatic garden focal point. At 80 cm high, they command attention without overwhelming their setting — a perfect balance between grandeur and versatility.
Giambologna – Inspiration
These statues are inspired by Giambologna (1529–1608), the Flemish-born sculptor who rose to prominence in Florence during the late Renaissance. Celebrated for his ability to capture grace, tension, and movement in static forms, Giambologna’s studies of rearing horses remain among his most admired works. These statues echo that tradition, channeling the same energy and elegance of the Renaissance.
