Item Description
Victorian Danish Silver Plate Repoussé Game Hunting Salver, c.1880s – In the Manner of Cohr
Subject & Medium
This rare Danish silver plate salver, dating to the late 19th century, is richly decorated in high repoussé relief with a detailed hunting motif.
The wide rim depicts wild boar, pheasants, and rabbits in a vivid tableau of Victorian sporting tradition. Crafted in silver plate over copper or base metal, the salver combines the brilliance of silver with the durability expected of functional serviceware.
Composition & Technique
The design balances function and artistry:
A central plain surface intended for carving or presentation.
A repoussé border alive with naturalistic foliage and wildlife.
Executed using repoussé and chasing, creating depth and lifelike detail in every feather, muscle, and scroll.
The craftsmanship exemplifies the skill of Danish silverworkers in the late Victorian period.
Attribution
The salver is unsigned and unmarked, which was typical of Danish plated wares of the time. Its style and execution, however, are strongly reminiscent of the work of Carl M. Cohr, one of Denmark’s foremost silver manufacturers.
It is therefore described as “in the manner of Cohr”, reflecting its likely origin within that tradition of fine silverplate production.
Dimensions
Width: 41 cm
Length: 53 cm
Its generous proportions confirm it was designed as a showpiece meat platter for formal dining.
Provenance
Acquired from a Southern Shire dealer’s collection in Tetbury and later curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD. Its rarity and stylistic alignment with Cohr add to its significance for collectors of Victorian silver and hunting-themed tableware.
