Item Description
A large, classically sculpted terracotta olive oil storage jar from Impruneta, Florence, dating to the 17th century.
This exquisite jar features two shaped handles resting above two paterae, with an inner red ochre glaze. The paterae are ornamental bas-relief discs, here depicting the heraldry of the Italian noble family for whom the jar was made, including initials and decorative logos. The jar boasts a beautifully patinated surface, with time's passage marked by cascading lichen on its smooth, weathered exterior.
Impruneta, located just south of Florence, Italy, is renowned for its highly sought-after Florentine terracotta, a tradition that dates back to the 14th century.
These olive oil jars evoke the warmth of Mediterranean climates, making them perfect for enhancing an Italian-inspired garden or adding a touch of traditional elegance to an English formal garden. They can be showcased as a solitary feature or grouped as a striking sculptural display.
