Item Description
A striking pair of Italian carved marble planters in the form of stylised lotus blossoms, c.1930.
Beautifully hand carved from solid marble, each planter is formed from overlapping lotus petals rising gracefully to an undulating scalloped rim. The sculptural composition reflects the elegant abstracted naturalism associated with the Art Deco period, when lotus motifs enjoyed renewed popularity in architecture and the decorative arts.
Lotus flowers and leaves were highly typical in Art Deco design, predominantly driven by the massive Egyptian Revival trend of the 1920s, sparked by Howard Carter discovered King Tutankhamun’s tomb in November 1922, creating a global obsession with ancient Egyptian iconography - the lotus—a classic Egyptian symbol of rebirth and creation.
Carved from pale marble, the surfaces have mellowed beautifully over time, developing a soft toned patina.
Wonderfully proportioned, these substantial planters possess an impressive architectural presence while remaining a highly practical scale for terraces, entranceways and formal garden settings. Whether planted with clipped topiary, agapanthus or filled with seasonal cut floral displays, indoors our out they make an elegant statement in both traditional and contemporary homes.
A beautifully carved and highly decorative pair of Italian marble garden planters of excellent scale and sculptural presence.
Condition: wear and repairs consummate with age.
