Item Description
Superb Arts & Crafts style inlaid mahogany and walnut box settle or hall bench by the celebrated English cabinet makers James Shoolbred & Co. c.1900. Top rail inlaid with a frieze of stylized flower head motifs over shaped slats, each pierced with a heart-shaped cutaway, and a central panel with beautiful Art Nouveau style inlaid decoration (very much in the manner of Shapland & Petter of Barnstaple). Over a panelled seat lifting to reveal useful storage inside for boots and shoes etc. The organic decorative scheme continues with two further inlaid panels to the front below the seat. Unusually shaped ends forming tapering sides and low arms. Shoolbred maker's stamp and serial number to the front edge below the seat. Excellent colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
