Item Description
Pair of W.A.S. Benson & Powell Glass Plafonnier lights.
An exceptional pair of antique Arts & Crafts plafonnier ceiling lights by renowned British designer W.A.S. Benson, featuring beautifully textured opalescent glass shades by James Powell & Sons of Whitefriars, dating to the late Victorian or early Edwardian period.
English c.1900.
These elegant antique ceiling lights perfectly capture the craftsmanship and distinctive design principles of the British Arts & Crafts Movement, combining beautifully engineered metalwork with exquisite hand-blown glass.
Each plafonnier features an intricate, sliver oxidised suspension frame with delicate decorative detailing, supporting a magnificent inverted conical glass shade. The distinctive Powell glass displays a subtle rippled, feather-like texture, creating a wonderful diffusion of light and highlighting the organic qualities synonymous with the period.
William Arthur Smith Benson (1854–1924) was one of Britain’s most influential Arts & Crafts lighting designers, celebrated for his innovative approach to metalwork and electric lighting. His collaborations with leading glassmakers, including James Powell & Sons of Whitefriars, produced some of the most desirable decorative lighting of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The beautifully balanced proportions, sculptural metalwork and unusual pointed glass shades make these antique Benson plafonniers particularly striking. Their timeless design lends itself equally well to traditional period properties and contemporary interiors.
A rare opportunity to acquire a matching pair of W.A.S. Benson ceiling lights with Powell glass shades, offering an exceptional combination of British design heritage, craftsmanship and understated elegance.
