Item Description
A fantastic and elegant late 19th Century Chinese hardwood altar table, dating to the late Qing Dynasty, Circa 1880.
Constructed in solid hardwood with a wonderfully rich, deep patina acquired over generations, the table displays the restrained elegance synonymous with traditional Chinese furniture. The overhanging rectangular top sits above a beautifully carved openwork apron, decorated throughout with the classic key fret (leiwen) motif, a traditional symbol of longevity and continuity. The square section legs are further enhanced with carved spandrels and joined by stretchers, creating a design that is both visually refined and structurally robust.
Originally intended as an altar or ancestral table, where it would have displayed ceremonial objects, bronzes and porcelain, it now serves equally well as a sophisticated console table in both period and contemporary interiors. Presented in good antique condition, with the expected minor wear, marks and patination consistent with age and use, adding greatly to its authenticity and character. A timeless and decorative piece of Chinese furniture, offering clean architectural lines and exceptional craftsmanship.
