Item Description
A fine example of a pair of antique Chimney pots in superb condition. A chimney pot is the extension at the top of a chimney. Its primary function is to increase the height of the smokestack, thereby improving the draft for fire since fire requires oxygen to burn and produce heat.
In British architecture, chimney pots were initially found in castles, often as simple chutes with plain openings, and later in manor houses. Beyond their functional purpose, they also serve as decorative elements, enhancing buildings with their ornate designs and intricate details. From the elaborate styles of the Edwardian era to more contemporary designs, chimney pots have evolved to reflect changing architectural trends and aesthetic preferences.
Clay chimney pots typically come in three main finishes: terracotta red, terracotta buff, and salt glaze. This example is a salt glazed Bishops chimney pot. The salt glaze is created by introducing salt into the kiln at the hottest point during firing.
Ideal to return to the top of the house or as a decorative planter.
